For your first flyrod, you probably don’t want a super stiff action, nor a very soft action. A good sporting goods store would gladly sell these to match the rod and reel. You need a good line, backing and leader. There are two “starter” choices - a 4 wt (that is the line size) rod in 8.5 feet length, or a 5 wt 9.0 foot rod. Again, graphite has greatly improved the feel for multi piece rods, though they probably aren’t necessary unless you hike a lot. I happen to like four piece pack rods, because I usually hike in to fish. But graphite is such a nice material that you can get a pretty good fly rod for under $200. I have had cheaper fly rods (~ $100) that felt like a big useless stick. The matching Okuma Sierra fly reel is a decent reel for about $40. Cabelas has them for about $150 for 4 piece rods. I like the Redington fly rods for their value. ![]() But i have not felt handicapped with a moderate priced rod and reel combination. I have some expensive fly rods and reels (Orvis, Sage, Loomis rods and a bunch of English reels).
